This recording was made in May 2014 during our joint visit to Chechnya with a group of Argentine documentary. The purpose of the trip was the sound fixation of dhikr - Sufi ritual. Serendipitously, our guide to the world of Chechen Sufism - Abubakar Midaev took us to his mother Maisat Midaeva.
Maisat is a Chechen grandmother, who was born presumably in 1918. Even she does not know the exact year and day of her birth. Maisat survived the deportation and two Chechen wars. According to Abubakar, his mother is one of those few older people who still remember the old Chechen songs. After a short conversation we recorded five short songs a cappella.
Most of the songs were religious. A style called "Nasam". Five short poems, telling us about the inevitability of death, the exceptional unity of Allah, and one song, describing the death of the Prophet Muhammad. There was only one nonreligious song in this list. The song is dedicated to the deportation of Chechens in Soviet times. Illi (Chechen folk song) describes all the hardships of Vainakhs, and sends curses against Stalin.
Should bear in mind that this record was an accident to some extent. In the future, we hope to find more performers of Chechen Illi and to record more ancient songs.
