Michał Wieczorek Yet another great field recording from Circassian collective. This time they visit the only two Pontic Greek folk musicians in Abkhazia. The music is purely enchanting.

about

____________________________________________________

It is one of our four releases that we recorded in Abkhazia in collaboration with the international ethnographic project - The Sayat Nova Project. Of course, in that expedition we were mainly interested in music of the autochthonous ethnic group - the Abkhaz. Yet, we did our best to find traditional musicians of other ethnic groups currently living in the region of Abkhazia.

Our plan included recording folklore of Hemshin Armenians and Pontic Greeks. Unfortunately, our team could not meet up with the Armenian musician; still, we were lucky enough with the Pontic Greeks.

The Pontic cultural center were courteous enough to give us contact information of their only folk musician in Abkhazia - Nikolas Singerov. Nikolas lives in the rural locality Chernigovka in the Gulripshi district where he makes a living from agriculture; in his leisure time he plays the Greek Lyre (a string instrument). It is the only information we managed to collect before getting familiar with him. Having been talking with the locals for the extended time, together with a local taxi driver we managed to find the Singerov's house, which situated in some distance from the neighbours' houses.

On the day of recording we were lucky several times. First of all, at the Singerov's house we found not only Nikolas Singerov but his cousin, Konstantinos Singerov; even though Konstantinos does not play any folk musical instruments, he knows and performs several Pontic songs. So, instead of a solo performance, we got a chance to record an authentic familial duet. Secondly, by good fortune, our recording session did not happen to be a dry one. Singerov brothers along with the rest of their extended family organized a dinner for us, with the aim of not only recording music, but spending nice time together. Home cooked dinner, alcohol, warm wishes, and, of course, music created the special atmosphere that we always look for, but which we are not always successful in finding.

At the recording place, we could not get a sufficient information about the collected melodies and songs. Singerov brothers are not specialists in folklore though they are undoubtedly its purveyors. When we asked our informants about which song we had just heard, we could not get detailed answers, except for being said that a song is Pontic or Ancient one. Perhaps, it is because of the fact that the brothers are not music professionals; and they received the knowledge from their parents and elderly neighbors through oral tradition.

After a while, we asked people who knew about it, and they told us that all collected melodies and songs are the authentic Pontic folklore. What is also interesting is the fact that while singing, Konstantinos improvised and mixed couplets of different songs. That is why we called each song with its first line.
