about

Traditional Lezgi Music from Akhty Village, Southern Dagestan.

"Akhty village is one of the centers of Lezgin culture. In the III century AD, a real historical figure and the Central figure of the Lezgin epic - Sharvili - was born here. In the XVI century, the village was described as a focus of trade and crafts. During the Russian-Caucasian war, Akhty became an important strategic point and the tsarist command built there a fortress and a strategically important network of roads. The village did not lose the leading positions and in the last century – the first in Dagestan theatre was established -Lezgin drama. According to the stories of our guides and informants, the status of an important cultural center is still given to Akhty village.

Our arrival lined up with the annual festival of Lezgin music In the house of Culture. Rural folklore festivals in the post-Soviet space are colorful yet strange. The events combine openness and freedom of the national holiday with strict regulations and dry officialdom of the Soviet etiquette.

You can get the general idea of the performers' skills or the condition of the traditional music of the village and the region, but recording folk songs from the stage is not the best idea. The musicians play only bits and pieces, often using cheap synths, and sometimes in lip-synch. In order not to fight with the Soviet rituals, we talked with the performers before the performance in a separate quiet room.
