The album was recorded during an expedition to Abkhazia during July 2014 with The Sayat Nova Project. Usually we look for unfiltered folklore, performances of music which has not been institutionally arranged or consists of pop variations. But during our time in Abkhazia an old contact brought us to the Abkhazian State Philharmonic. This cultural center has its own ensemble, Gunda, which was established at 1977 by Rosa Chamagua, its first and only director. The name of the ensemble is an allusion to the Nart Epic of Abkhazs, Circassians, Ossets, Kharachais, Balkars and other peoples of the Caucasus. In the Nart Epic, Gunda is the only sister of a hundred brothers. Its fitting that an ensemble named after such a vivid female character consists solely of women. Each of them has a formal education in music and the repertory of the ensemble is based on the creations of Abkhazian composers, such as Nodar Kwarchia, Konstantin Chengelia, Otar Huntsaria, and the choir’s director Rosa Chamagua. In the majority of these compositions, folklore serves as a fount of inspiration; these pieces cannot be considered independent of musical folklore. Gunda also plays Circassian, Georgian, Russian and Ukrainian music, with a special emphasis on the use of a variety of instruments: akhina (a stringed instrument), apkhartsa (an Abkhazian violin), ajumaa (a sort of harp), achangur (a fretted instrument) and many others. All the ensemble’s instruments are features in their “academic” modifications and have been adapted to conform to a 12-tone chromatic scale. Gunda is the winner of many contests and a participant in international folk festivals. This group may be considered one of the most prominent choirs in the contemporary Abkhazian folk music scene. This release represents a slightly different approach from our label, in that it consists of several compositions recorded in the State Philharmonic of Abkhazia. While Gunda’s repertoire features compositions which were composed and performed in the context of the Soviet period, we believe them to be interesting, eloquent, and pleasant works which are worthy of attention.
