This is probably the briefest album in our collection, and it is something special to us. Our label is in a constant search for, or I should say, a hunt for the authentic materials. We're barely interested in folk rock, so to say “world music”, as well as music of the 20th century, though with small exceptions.
The traditional society was destroyed long ago; with that, people lost their abilities and skills to compose new songs and melodies in the archaic manner. At least, it seems to be the case for nearly all ethnic groups of the Northern Caucasus.
In the Circassian cultural tradition, composing of the new materials stopped along with the destruction of the djeguako-storytellers’ institution. When those tribal bards, Circassian minstrels, ceased to exist as a social group, the development of the tradition came to an end. The only thing left to people is to preserve the surviving heritage; the modern attempts of the Circassian musical tradition are limited to the pop music and some forced experiments.
The reason for our hope we found in Adygea, where we went on our expedition in November, 2014. Thanks to local enthusiasts, folklore of this region has survived much better than in The Kabardino-Balkarian Republic and The Karachay–Cherkess Republic. That expedition is difficult to call successful in terms of the amount of the materials collected. The everyday factors did not allow us to record all of what we planned. However, we found things that we even had not looked for.
To date, Kazbek Nagaroko is one of the most interesting contemporary performers of the Circassians songs and melodies. Having been inspired by our previous collaboration in the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic, we met up again in hopes to make some recordings of the new material which he had learned by listening to our ancestors singing in archived sources.
We were very surprised and without stopping to think, the young self-taught man sang the song about Sheikh Mansur, of whom we had not heard. The song about that Chechen warrior of XVIII, who had friendly relationships with Circassians, had not reached us so far. The English lyrics to that song are found in the Edmond Spenser’s book “Travels in Circassia and Krim-tartary”
Kazbek together with his friend and fellow Zaur Usup translated the lyrics into the Circassian language, taking into account the artistic peculiarities of the folklore language. They also set the lyrics to music, which they composed by themselves, doing their best to make it as close as possible to the traditional manner of performance. Their joint collaboration is what makes this album.
Perhaps, an experienced folklorist may without difficulty recognize that that song is not from the distant past, but its modern reconstruction. However, it seems that this is one of the first positive experiences of emerging new Circassian folklore.
To confirm our feelings, Kazbek Nagaroko also played a lullaby of his own composition on Kamyl (a circassian flute) in two variations - with and without counterpoint. We decided to publish that material separately to prevent it from getting lost among other recordings of indigenous folk music.
Can we say that new djeguako-storytellers are emerging in Circassian culture? May we relate the artists of this album to that tradition? The answer is no. Those are only the first steps.
The fact that such masterful materials are rare (from our point of view) and make people wonder
is the evidence that the Circassian musical tradition is experiencing not the best time of its history, though not the worst.

She knocks me out. She really does. The sadness, the longing, the blues which seeps from this music are too hard to listen to, sometimes. Bought a couple of these Greek music compilations and stumbled into some major musical discoveries, this record being one of them. Check it out. Robert Bloemkolk
