The album is our second Circassian release (we remind that our debut was dedicated to the Circassian folklore). And as the previous one this recording was extremely spontaneous and for this reason became very atmospheric and live.
On October 24-25, 2014 Ored Recordings together with the Museum of Fine Arts of Kabardino-Balkaria and Madina Saralp’s Art Center held a presentation of Zamudin Guche’s book “Learn to Play Shychepshyn”. Zhyu Ensemble with its head and founder Zamudin and his little apprentices also came from the Adygheya Republic to visit us.
The event was successful. But our after-event-meeting and chat-in was much more successful. This album comprises the recordings made in the night from October 25 to October 26. The youth of Adygheya (from the western part of the historic Circassia) and Kabarda (from the eastern part) met to sing their songs. The play that immediately took place at the moment may be called a modern form of Khachesh, sacral and important concept in the Adyghe culture. Khachesh has been a guest room in the male part of a house where Circassians used to meet for feasting, discussion of topical issues and music-making. But Khachesh is not only a room but it is a process of co-creation.
Today we do not have houses of traditional Adyghe architecture or special rooms. But Khachesh exists and creates spiritual space. And the same happened in the night of recording.
Kazbek Nagaroko, employee of the Shovgensky district administration of the Republic of Adygheya, Physicist by profession. Due to his communication with Zamudin and a long-term experience within Zhyu Ensemble, Kazbek has mastered Shychepshyn (the Circassian violin), Kamyl-flute and the great repertoire of sings of various genres. We consider Kazbek as one of a number of singers who is able to improvise in a traditional way. You can feel it from the unique style and the “wattage” of this young Dzheguako*.
Surely not only Kazbek was singing but others too such as Artur Abid, Zaur Yusup, Tembolat Keref, Zaurbek Kozh, Nauruz Agoy and very young Damir Guago. Like Kazbek, none of them are professional musician. But they are not stranger to the native singing tradition. Most of others attended were a background for the songs – ezhyu.
That night we did not have any program or planned repertoire. The songs were sung spontaneously and met the atmosphere: ballads about the heroes of the Caucasian War in the XVIII-XIX centuries, epic Nart songs , several hymeneal songs and melodies, etc.
As it often occurs Khachesh was organized not for recording and therefore the quality and the completeness depended to our reaction and swiftness that once or twice let us down. For this reason some strophes or fragments in several songs are absent (they are marked). But nevertheless this material sounds very interesting.
For sure these recordings may be considered as an illustration of the modern state of the Adyghe musical culture. On the other hand you see good friends met to spend time together.

I have loved the dixie Humming birds since the 1960s, but have never heard their early work--amazing. Listening to all this wonderous harmony and spirit comes close to restoring my lost faith in Christianity. ronspin
